Joe Madden Hard to classify -- it's rootsy, but not country; you could call it singer/songwriter, but some of the arrangements have such a big pop/rock sound. I love the diversity of material, I love her singing and lyrics, both of which remind me of Jenny Lewis a bit -- the way her voice goes from soaring to whispering, equally effective in either register, the way her lyrics feel so powerfully self-aware and personal but are a little too open-ended to be simply confessional. Love it, start to finish. Favorite track: Daddy.

We began where we began same old story with a different plan same old woman meets the same old man and they knock each other out it rained so hard as we drove across the state you laughed at first but then your chemistry was strange the light in your eyes fell away like loose change and i tried to figure out who you were at all, who you were at all you were at all something of a garden, something of a martyr, i’m helpless in your hands oh yeah my candy machine gun lemonade flavored poison don’t turn away from me Of all seven daughters he loved the youngest her long brown hair felt no shame in his caress ‘don’t be suspicious of my love it was no accident’ he told her without name I’ve become so defined by you I can’t tell up from down the nature of your beauty pulls my bones into the ground I smile though I ache as though the wind has stole my crown and it makes me laugh like Cain did and you weren’t at all, no you weren’t at all something of a garden, something of a martyr I’m so helpless in your hands oh yeah my candy machine gun, lemonade flavored poison don’t turn away from me
Rattlesnake take my hand, wake me up, lead me back I don’t believe you’re all that bad anyway. My old man don’t care about me, he’s got a cold heart and I wanna set it free but it’s not my job, but it’s not easy so I guess it’s time to just let it be anyway Don’t forget where you come from and don’t let it get in your way The rattlesnake’s gonna get someone but it won’t get me, cause I got my gun, and I got my heart and I’m going home today So please forget the things I said, I was dark in the heart, and deep in my head but I want you to know that I loved you the best anyway I might pray to keep me safe, draw me a map in the water and clay I don’t believe in the things they say at all and the rattlesnake may take my soul but that’s the risk that I’ve come to know when you love something you can’t control at all Don’t forget where you come from and don’t let it get in your way The rattlesnake’s gonna get someone but it won’t get me, cause I got my gun, and I got my heart and I’m going home today So please forget the things I said, I was dark in the heart, and deep in my head but I want you to know that I loved you the best anyway
Raggedy Man 02:11
Raggedy man, raggedy man, I don’t wanna be your raggedy Ann so watch me go back to the place I know. there’s a whole lot more in this big old world than watching myself be your raggedy girl So you pass me around, make me feel small, love me so much then don’t love me at all and I wait all day for your telephone call but what Raggedy man don’t know about me I’m tearing those rags from the bottom of my feet and running, and running. Oh, but I dont’ want to draw any blood, but maybe that’s what it’s gonna come down to when you find out so lovely in my head that I’d rather dream than be dead in the water.
Sad Baby 01:59
Tried hard to leave the earth, but the strings pulled too hard. if you want to find escape, there’s a place in your back yard. Lying flat upon our backs watching silver zephyrs pass the sky is auburn the night is sleeping in the past... it won’t keep you. I won’t keep you. Trash piles on the curb, what do you love now that there’s no me? Go and make your pretty world, it doesn’t take a telescope to see I won’t keep you. I won’t keep you.
Daddy 02:34
When daddy comes home he’ll have a box of presents, something from one of each of the fifty states. Mommy will be so happy, daddy will be so happy and we’ll all be a happy family for a day. Daddy wheels all across the interstate. Checks in the mail and a phone call on father’s day but we’ll all wear sombreros, we don’t think about tomorrow cause we’re all a happy family for a day. And daddy is so good and true he brings you things like super glue and rubber gloves and bags of sand. so if you see him won’t you wave your hand at daddy. Daddy’s hair is long and pepper gray. He tells me that the highway don’t let me stay and the road goes on forever and we can ride together so we’ll all be a happy family every day.
Money 01:47
There’s a new war coming. It lives in the wires of an oven, and the pockets of the jeans that you love, and the hair of the woman that you covet. Money you love it, and you sure can’t live without it but you got a hole up in your pocket the size of the lover in your locket. And the skies will all turn violet, your scared and your silent. Quiet as a newborn violin. But maybe that’s the new kind of violence. Money I love it, and I sure can’t live without it, oh but I got a hole up in my pocket.
A Piano 02:27
The King and Queen of many things, but not the Cuckoo’s colored wings, had laughed at me and everything around the land that lay so barren I still wonder if they’re laughing in the dark with folded hands and swollen choreographed speeches “read the cards and we will teach you how to see through the looking glass and how to fight a thousand deaths” and come out sober and blame you for nothing. I headed for the mountains, and, I walked up to the great green trees but they just stared right back at me said I could stay there through my pain could learn to make my tears the rain for branches that would still remain you must be tough to be a tree, to take the claws and winter breeze “you love him more than you will know, you’ll fight a war and kill some men you’ll take the long way back to him”. we could move out west and buy a piano we can move out west and buy a piano.
Child, you bathed in the garbage water that’s how you got so sensitive! in the trailer made of tin and hives, when your mother was still alive. before, before the dark gets dressed. When you love the hallowed sin, can I hold your heart again? Men blow in and out like wind we all end when it begins. Before, before the darkness gets dressed.
Kid October 04:13
Kid October, I’m knocked over And I see you, it starts over but you can’t see me wildwood flower I am honest with your power. And all i ever wanted was a painted face and I took it’s place and you were never here till I look behind, so nevermind. Kid October, clouded over we can’t see her but we believe her she covers us up in a heavy sweater bring me something to make it better and all I ever wanted was a painted face and I took it’s place and you were never here till I look behind, so nevermind, nevermind.
Leo 02:52
Bad For You 02:36
Everything’s bad for you honey. Everything’s bad for you Don’t forget what your told or you’ll never grow old everything’s bad for you. Don’t laugh too much or cry too much or eat a candy bar for your lunch don’t hope don’t dope or hate the pope or use unhypoallergenic soap don’t eat don’t chew don’t drive your car or pick up strange men from the bar don’t pet stray cats or smoke cigars cause all of it’s bad for you. Yeah, everything’s bad for you from the sun in the sky to the gum on your shoe, sleeping too much or having nothing to do, everything’s bad for you. Oh everything’s bad for you loud rock n’ roll and the government too, swearing and staring in the swimming pools everything’s bad for you. TV shows and magazines, huffing on markers or gasoline dressing like a tramp or a beauty queen then trying to get to heaven but your hands ain’t clean yeah everything’s bad for you...
Wendy Bird 03:19
When you close your eyes, what is it you see? Tall buildings in rain wave like the trees they used to be. And I know that I must grow up but I see your shadow asleep by my window at night and we fly, so high, so high. Braid my hair and take me for a ride I’d go anywhere. and I don’t need to have my pride. Silly summer always on my mind now it’s gone, it’s time to say goodnight. yeah I know that I must grow up but I see your shadow asleep by my window at night and we fly, so high, so high.

Titled after the dreams she had about the record cover being shiny gold, “Golder” represents Haley striving to become a better artist, growing with each song she writes. Recorded at Pachyderm studio (Nirvana, PJ Harvey) in Cannon Falls, MN, Haley and band went in knowing most of the songs in advance, but reconstructed them while in the studio. The songs themselves are largely a reflection of a wonderful and lonely year spent in Portland, Oregon. Haley recently returned to the Twin Cities in July 2010, became active once again in the amazing music scene (including the formation of a punk/new-wave side project Gramma’s Boyfriend) and is set to get out on the road and play songs from “Golder.”

“Golder,” is an evolution into something brighter, heavier, and stronger.

Haley Saint Paul, Minnesota

Hi! You've found my band camp page. The sales from purchasing these albums goes directly to the artist (me!) with the exception of the band camp fee of course. So, thank you!
You may also notice my name says just "Haley" and my records still say Haley Bonar. This year I legally changed my name to reflect my maternal lineage, Haley McCallum, and decided to go mononymous with my stage name.
